Victorian greetings Cards

Dog Ephemera

Victorian Greetings Cards

The later Victorian Period was also the time of the rise of the Greetings Card industry, thanks to this there is an array of dog images available in the form of Birthday and Christmas cards, these cards were collected by children at the time so have often been stuck into albums, so condition is an issue as staining can be visible from the paste used.

Victorian Dog Scraps

Printed in sheets specifically for the purpose of being cut out and stuck down in scrap books were a large range of brightly colored chromolithographs, these vary in quality but the best can be quite superb.

Whole sheets in mint condition are very rare, but individual scraps can be found.

Advert for Dog Soap

Edwardian Postcards of Dogs

From around 1900-1920 Picture Postcards were popular, both of commercial images and also of photographs - photography was then just taking off in popularity too. There are a good supply of post cards available if you look around at very reasonable prices and they are interesting historically as they are good markers for how the look of any one breed changes over time.

Advertising Material

Summed up by Dogs in Advertising and Advertizing for dogs! Dogs can be found endorsing all kind of products and some gret images can be found and collected, of course if you like Scottie Dogs and Westie's you're really in luck as Black and White Whiskey have one of the longest campaigns of all time featuring dogs and that scottie/westie pair have been used for over 50 years!!!

I'm always interested in adverts for dog products, they come in all kinds from kennels to doggie soap products and i particularily like the charming quaint style of the period around 1900.

Letterhead Crests featuring Dogs

With the rise in numberes of the Middle classes from 1850 onwards, there was a corresponding increase in the amount of embossed and crested stationary that was used, although rare dog motiff's were occasionally used and fortunately collected by people around the Edwardian era through to about 1940, so it is possible occasionally to find an album with a whole page of dog crests - although they are infact pretty rare
